Today I expressed (pumped) my first breast milk for LJ (or anyone for that matter :)). After almost 40 min of pumping, I had a bottle with only one ounce! The manual pump was not easy. It initially hurt but the real problem was it was tedious. I had this crazy belief that dad would join in on the pumping. So I bought a manual pump so he could join in fun and build hand strength. Well that didn't happen. Dad wasn't jumping for joy to pump but neither was I. It hurts enough when I do It!!!
Pumping is also difficult because I am doing it while feeding LJ. LJ is on one breast and the pump is on the other. When I'm not feeding him, he is sleeping or (rarely) sitting in his car seat or swing starring at the lights or contemplating something grand. Most of the day and night he is in my arms. Thus breast feeding while pumping (or should I say pumping while breast feeding) is the easiest thing for me. It took way too long to get everything set up anyway...open box, put it in dishwasher (on top self!), sterilize in boiled water, dry, and put together. But it was great to see him drink the one ounce from his dad. I'm determined to breast and bottle feed LJ. It's only right dad gets a shot. Maybe now dad may wake up and tend to the multiple late night cries. After all who can blame him for sleeping now but soon he will have the ammo. So the two steps back refer to nipple confusion. For the none breastfeeding moms and men, nipple confusion refers the baby refusing a bottle nipple, refusing breast after a bottled is introduced, or sucking mom's nipple the way he does with a bottle (which could hurt mom). We seemed to have one this fight. He bounced with ease between the two! But now I think I'm going to have to buy an electronic pump!
